How can I get the rust off of my metal grater?
I’s just a regular metal grater that you would find in any other kitchen, but it has rust on it. Not so much that you can’t see the silver-ish colour but it’s getting a light orange and brown on some parts. Do I just have to scrub as much as I can off of it or is there an easier way? Other than buying a new one, that is.
A cheese grater is a basic utensil in every kitchen, and one of the most important. Unfortunately, it’s also one of the hardest to clean. Don’t give up and throw out your grater, because there are a few simple methods to make the dreaded chore much easier.
Step 1Brush off the loose bits of cheese, and soak the cheese grater in hot soapy water for about 15 minutes, and then wash it, scrubbing in the direction of the grater. Wash the soaked cheese grater in the dishwasher, if you have one.
Step 2Grate a piece of apple or raw potato immediately after you grate cheese. The potato will clear the shredded cheese from the holes of the grater.
Step 3Use a nylon scrubber and scrub the inside of the grater first, and then clean the outside.
Step 4Keep a toothbrush under your sink, and use it only for cleaning your cheese grater. The long handle makes it easier to clean inside the grater, and to get into the small holes. A fingernail brush will also work well.
Step 5Put a stubborn cheese grater in the freezer for a few hours. The stuck-on bits should scrub off easily.
Tips & Warnings
Spray a cheese grater with a light coating of non-stick cooking spray before you use it. This will make clean up much easier.If you soak the cheese grater in hot water immediately after using it, most of your cheese grater problems will be eliminated. The cheese will be soft, and will wash off easily.
